Postpartum Coverage Extension

Overview

This proposed State Plan Amendment (SPA) implements Section 9812 of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (PL 117-2) that affords states’ Medicaid programs an option to expand the postpartum coverage period from 60 days to 365 days. On 06/23/2022, the Arizona State Legislature passed HB 2863, which included a postpartum coverage extension for Medicaid members.

This SPA is drafted with standard language that is used in State Plans across the United States and will provide continuous, 12-month coverage for eligible women who were enrolled with Medicaid while pregnant, beginning on the last day of pregnancy.

AHCCCS will implement this coverage option, effective upon CMS approval and completion of all operational/system changes necessary to extend coverage.
